What is insurance for, and what does the small print change?

Premiums exceed the expected payout on average — that margin is the price of protection from losses you can't absorb.

Two worked examples

US
$1,800 a year to cover a $60,000 car.
A 1-in-100 chance of a write-off ($600) plus a 1-in-10 chance of a $6,000 repair ($600) is a $1,200 expected loss — the $600 margin is cheap next to losing $60,000 yourself.
Japan
¥100,000 a year to cover a ¥3,000,000 car.
A 1-in-100 chance of a write-off (¥30,000) plus a 1-in-10 chance of a ¥300,000 repair (¥30,000) is a ¥60,000 expected loss — the ¥40,000 margin is cheap next to losing ¥3,000,000 yourself.

The common mistake

The mistake: Judging insurance by whether you claimed, instead of by the loss you could not afford to carry.

What’s true: You pay a small sure loss to delete a rare unpayable one — the margin is the fee for sleep.

The gotcha clause hides on page 3

Headlines sell; clauses bind. Fees, exit penalties and auto-renewals usually sit in the clauses, not the headline. The headline is marketing; the clause is the contract — the expensive sentence is the quiet one.

Daniel's home policy covers fire and theft. A pipe in his wall slowly leaks for months, and the policy lists gradual water damage as something it never covers. The insurer pays nothing, so Daniel pays the repair bill himself.

Kofi's bike is stolen from outside his flat, and his insurance covers it. When his claim is paid, the insurer takes off the deductible first, so Kofi covers that part of the loss himself. The insurer pays only the rest toward a new bike.

UK
'Free' savings app: a buried clause charges £1 per withdrawal plus a 2% early-exit fee on your locked £1,500 — £1 + £30 = £31 just to reach your own money.
Nigeria
'Free' savings app: a buried clause charges ₦50 per withdrawal + 2% early-exit fee on your locked ₦200k — ₦50 + ₦4,000 = ₦4,050 just to reach your own money.

Where you’ll meet it

  • 3–6 months, liquid, untouchedThe fund is not for returns — it exists so a bad month never touches your future money.
  • Deposit insurance has a limitThe cover follows the bank, not you: the same limit applies at each bank, and only to deposits.
  • Small monthly charges, big yearly billMonthly prices are set to feel small; the yearly total is what the habit really costs.
